They were immensely popular consoles in the '80s and '90s because of the automation and mix recall and not entirely because of the way they sounded. Personally? I don't like the sound or workflow of SSL E & G desks nor many of their endless (and off the mark) plugin emulations. but the question of are they worth it? Required gear? Like anything else if you dig the way the sound and it does good things for your workflow then its worth it. I'm not about to sit here & write up a history of Solid State Logic when there's already so much information out there. or what's this Mars-all amplifier everyone's talking about?! it'd be like someone on this board saying they're a serious guitar player & having no idea what a Fender is. If I'm mixing a session say at 96k and starting to push the limits of my 2 Octos, and if I'm using the UAD SSL ChStrip I can easily pull up the SSL Native version of the ChStrip that is CPU based and get there without taxing the UAD cards more.Ĭlick to expand.Certainly not everyone can be familiar with everything, however I can easily understand why people in a production forum would be skeptical of someone asking "who & what's this SSL stuff about"?Īt a certain point if your even slightly into recording and production chances are you've at least heard of SSL and/or seen the same mentioned a zillion times.
I use each one that fits best for the source.Īnother thing I found that can work out by having similar plug from different makers.
Just like consoles they can have variances.
They had a complete code rewrite recently which is solid! I had the Duende version and these are definitely a step up! They also have a new Reverb called FlexVerb which is very nice too! They have more updates coming as well, so they are on top of it! I also have all the UAD and Slate stuff. I'm a beta tester for the new SSL plugins called Native which used to be called Duende. Can you get by with just one set of plugs? Sure! But sometimes it's nice to have variations if it's presented to try something something slightly different. Learn what you have and get the most out of them. Is SSL worth looking into? Im not going to go sign up and just buy their products because a couple of people on FB chimed in. Kinda figured work with what feels best for you policy but maybe I don't know crap lol. The hardware looks familiar on their site but are they really all that superior? If so.ok great Ill sign up and check it out. Were in a studio now and hired an engineer but I have recently gotten pretty good at production.More of a straight up guitarist/ songwriter and live performer but yeah I always recorded if I had an idea or need to send something until this year. I am considering an apollo X but for processing power is all really.
Im just working harder at it is all and trying different stuff to get pro results and apprently Im doing well which makes me think should we save money next time and look into upgrading our stuff? I mean it costs way less to upgrade then go into the studio with the engineer we are using or well about the same. My band mates have been really impressed in what Im sending them now.
I used to record to just get ideas I had down over the years and only really got good at the producing/ mixing this year, actually caring about my mix and experimental micing and using Slate. Then someone says "WTF you never heard of SSL? They are only the premium ultimate pro audio solution." and another chimed in as if it was disturbing I never heard of it. So I asked a question to Gobbler (which I use for slate everything bundle) and they were of course acting like it ws superior to both of them. I was on fb saw an ad for ssl plug ins and no I never heard of them.
